Disney Announces LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special

The original Star Wars Holiday Special, the repressed memory of many Star Wars fans which followed Luke, Leia, Chewbacca and Han Solo’s attempt to visit the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk in order to celebrate Life Day, is being revisited by LEGO this holiday season.

Coming this November to Disney+, the LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is again focused on Life Day. This time Rey and BB-8 are about to set out on an adventure that takes place after The Rise of Skywalker but is also a bit of a time-traveling experience.

Instead of ending up on Kashyyyk, the duo finds themselves in a Jedi Temple to learn about the history of a galaxy far, far away. Throughout their journey, which airs on November 17th, they will meet fan-favorite characters including Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, and Yoda. Other Sequel Trilogy heroes Poe, Finn, Rose, R2-D2, and of course Chewbacca also make appearances.

“It’s a celebration of the saga,” executive producer Josh Rimes tells USA Today. “A lot of characters will be interacting with different characters and perhaps even different versions of themselves at different ages.” Referencing how Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren will all be together, Rimes says, “It’s really hilarious with what’s going to happen with those guys.”

The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special is directed by Ken Cunningham who has worked on other LEGO productions including LEGO Spider-man: Vexed by Venom and LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar. It is written by David Shayne who is no stranger to LEGO Star Wars having written for All-Stars and The Freemaker Adventures.

It will premiere exclusively on Disney+ which is the first LEGO Star Wars title to premiere on the platform, and the run time is approximately 45 minutes.

Fans who are long in the tooth will remember the original Holiday Special also premiered on November 17th, 1978.

It charted the trials and ordeals that Luke, Han and Princess Leia took to attend Chewbacca’s family Life Day festival. Aside from giving us our first look at Kashyyyk, the TV special included many members of the original cast and debuted Boba Fett. Set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, fans worldwide (including George Lucas himself!) have tried to forget this pitiful portion of the Star Wars timeline.

Hopefully, this is set to change!
