Making its battlefront debut at the Battle of Naboo, the Baktoid Armor Workshop’s hover tank was the backbone of the Trade Federation’s assault forces during the Invasion of Naboo, where it was used to provide infantry cover and as a primary heavy weapon. This formidable gun platform, which could cross any terrain unimpeded and highly accurate targeting computers, could be taken out by a glowing gumball.
Making its LEGO debut in the year after The Phantom Menace was released, 7155 Trade Federation Tank formed part of the second wave of Episode 1 sets, it was eventually retired, circa 2001, and slipped into obscurity as the events of the Star Wars saga evolved.
It wasn’t until Star Wars changed media format – from cinema to the living room – in 2008 that we were reminded of the Armoured Assault Tank when they re-appeared when the animated Clone Wars series was broadcast on TV. This prompted LEGO to release 8018 Armored Assault Tank (AAT) – this time decorated in CIS blue – in 2010.
Since then (aside from various mini-scale and Microfighter versions) this vehicle, which became as ubiquitous to the Clone Wars land battles as the Jedi Interceptor was in space has only been issued one other time – as the strangely proportioned 75080 AAT, which brought back the tans of the battle at Great Grass Plains in 2015.

With the return of the Clone Wars animated series for its seventh and final season, interest in this chapter in the history of Star Wars was rekindled and LEGO was smart enough to introduce several associated sets – as well as a couple of Clone Wars-adjacent ones – in this year’s Summer Wave.
The set is a quick 45-minute, enjoyable build and aside from a bit a mix-up assembling the angled power generators, it went together with ease.
Lacking the 6 x 6 rounded corners that do so well to replicate the hover tank’s base, this set retaining the snub profile that was introduced with the midi-like scaled 2015 version, which is really its only drawback. To be honest, the stumpy profile is only evident when compared to the first two Armored Assault Tanks and when viewed on its own the short curve isn’t any kind of an issue – until you look at the vehicle in profile.
If there was any room for further improvement it would be to design the main cannon to fire the spring-loaded missiles, instead of having them set up to launch from the base.
The set is completed by three minifigures – two identical Battledroid (oddly one is labelled as AAT Driver Battle Droid and the other a Battle Droid) figures, Ahsoka Tano and Ahsoka’s Clone Trooper. Realising how popular Ahsoka has become, and the added bonus of a 332nd Division clone trooper, LEGO has clearly capitalised on fan interest, which it has leveraged against a $39.99 price tag.
What is frustrating about this set is the Ahsoka minifigure which breaks the timeline trend. Since making her debut in 2008, each successive minifigure has aged chronologically with the TV series as LEGO has brought out new sets (almost) concurrently with each season – until now! This is likely to get back to form if/when Ahsoka appears in the second season of The Mandalorian, coming out on October 30.
