While not exactly one of the most iconic Star Wars vehicles, Grievous’s starfighter – named Soulless One by the cyborg general and because of his frequent retreats also referred to as Spineless One – is still in demand enough to warrant six (three mini/micro and three System-scale) LEGO sets since it first appeared in Revenge of the Sith (2005).
It still took nearly two years for the LEGO Star Wars team to put their minds to the task and deliver us 7656 General Grievous Starfighter, which formed part of the Winter Wave just in time for Christmas 2006 and the thirtieth anniversary of Star Wars in 2007. Retired in October 2008, surprisingly this set didn’t stay out of circulation for long because in 2010 it was re-released as 8095 General Grievous’ Starfighter due to its apperance in the popular Clone Wars TV series.
More than a ten year gap occured, which LEGO filled in with 75199 General Grievous’ Combat Speeder in 2018. This addition to the Clone Wars collection was derived from a brief appearance in the ninth episode of the fifth season of the TV series.
The latest version – 75286 General Grievous’s Starfighter – was released in the Winter Wave at the start of 2020, and continued the war of the plural possessive apostrophe.

Whether you are adding this to your collection for the minifigures or the bullish starfighter, you won’t be let down because this version shows considerable advancement from the previous two – particularly over 8095 General Grievous’ Starfighter, which looks distinctly transitionary when all three are placed side by side (courtesy of Brickset.com).
Grievous’s (or Grievous’ as it was incorrectly labelled in three earlier set names) personal spaceship, which is more of a runabout than a starfighter, clearly takes design elements from Ferdinand Porsche’s Type 47 and a World War II-era fighter plane.
Unfortunately, the blockiness of LEGO bricks doesn’t quite convey the sleek fuselage of the one in the movie-slash-TV show, but that’s forgivable. The increased use of elements with smooth surfaces goes a long way to stripping out the studiness of earlier incarnations. Where studs are evident, they are used for effect – such as the gold flowers that represent the lateral thrust ducts.
The missing landing legs don’t cause too many issues, because the thrust vectoring fin can be flipped up, allowing for the model to be put in the same non-flight position as that seen in The Revenge of the Sith. Additionally, the engine cowlings slide back to reveal storage space for the projectiles and lightsabers – though the latter locker is quite a squeeze.
The minifigures provided includes the Obi-Wan Kenobi with a battle damaged tunic that was first introduced in 75269 Duel on Mustafar, depicting the wear and tear Kenobi’s clothes endured when he and Grievous went blade to blades. Backing up the Jedi Master is a specialist clonetrooper, marked with the two orange flashes of the 2nd Airborne Company, with an updated print from its first appearance in 75036 Utapau Troopers from 2014.
Representing the bad guys is General Grievous, the four-armed, multi-jointed, lightsaber-swinging Supreme Commander of the Separatist Droid Army that fought the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. First appearing in 75040 General Grievous’ Wheel Bike in 2014, this is now the go-to minifigure for this character.
Available to buy now, 75286 General Grievous’s Starfighter can be found at LEGO.com, Entertainment Earth, Walmart, Target and Amazon.com for $79.99 (MSRP).
