Under The Spotlight: 75318 The Child

With all the attention that The Child has got since his first appearance in The Mandalorian’s premiere episode, you’d be pardoned from thinking that ABY – the nominated Star Wars calendar era timeline origin – actually means After Baby Yoda.

Such has been the effect that The Child has had on fandom that the little big-eared alien has had more products made in its likeness than Jar-Jar Binks! While a number of companies have shamelessly jumped on The Child bandwagon, LEGO has demonstrated restraint and has only delivered up three versions of the character – including the most recent addition: 75318 The Child.

So let’s hear it for the only Post Disney Purchase addition to the Star Wars galaxy that hasn’t divided the fans, been the reason for online bullying, or caused mass debate. This is not the way.

First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room – this is not an Ultimate Collector Series set. While it ticks all the boxes – which are “a display model on a stand with a data label” according to Star Wars team leader Jens Kronvold Frederiksen – 75318 The Child is part of the Sculptures subtheme.

Build-wise, this set follows the same strategy as those that came before it – the skeleton, followed by the panels that make up the clothing (which are sublime), then the hands, and finally the little gremlin’s head.

As fun as the build is, it’s the ears and face – with its emotive eyes, articulated mouth, and positionable ears – that is the crowning glory of the build process.

Color matching-wise, the selection of sand green and dark tan elements is spot on and a year ago LEGO aficionados went loco for all these rare colored bricks – until 75255 Yoda came along.

Don’t expect the details on the data plate to include The Child’s homeworld or species – it simply lists them as “unknown” – and when these do get revealed it will be Disney actual that gets the honor. The inclusion of The Child’s favorite toy – the gear shift knob from The Razor Crest – is a cute one, and the notation of the creature’s height (34 cm) should serve to inspire creative builders to buy a second set to double up on the original model (at 19 cm) to create a lifesize version.

The only tweak that this set needs are four 2 x 2 plates with rounded bottoms attached to The Child’s base to give it the levitating nun effect. No doubt some ingenious builder will figure out howto incorporate a remote control S-Brick unit so The Child can be propelled across the floor.

This +1000 piece set – which retails for $79.99 (RRP) – is available at the LEGO website and brand stores, Amazon.com, Walmart and Target now. Be warned though, it’s going in and out of stock fast.
