The latest LEGO catalog is out and – unsurprisingly – causing much excitement and anticipation, because who doesn’t love the thought of new LEGO sets and one particular page is causing more anxiety than the rest.
Just like last year’s post when we raised hopes that a series of Star Wars collectible minifigures (CMF) might be released, we’re doing it again!
There’s two things LEGO is good at (and one they are getting better at) and that’s teasing and timing (the other is keeping a lid on leaks), so when the new LEGO catalog came out, revealing the 21st series of CMFs, with a footnote that the next series would be out in May, and that we “will be surprised!” we took note.
While our predictions that the May 2019 series could be a Star Wars one – based on a repeated pattern of releasing CMFs based on third party intellectual property, the importance of May for Star Wars licensees and a leaked Star Wars minifigure that couldn’t be assigned to any known upcoming sets – proved to be wrong, we’re prepared to go out on a limb again.
The first two points above, which remain salient, are joined by a new third piece of anecdotal evidence – the teaser. Over the past few years, LEGO has quietly trialed a number of new lines to gauge what fan uptake would be; the Mini exclusives that were available at Star Wars Celebration as well as the comic-cons at San Diego and New York in 2012, the promotional build-on-a-base polybagged minifigures that came out in 2018, the Darth Vader and Sithtrooper busts from Star Wars Celebration Chicago and San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, and – most importantly – the collectible minifigure series that came out for the 20th anniversary of the LEGO Star Wars license last year.
Of course, this is all conjecture – but what do you think? Would you like to see a CMF series of Star Wars characters, and which ones? Share your thoughts below.
At this time I am not really bothered what Lego release as long as everyone in every country gets an equal chance of buying it. Collectible mini figures sound great but suspect that they will be outside of my price bracket on the very inflated secondary market. I just do not get what Lego marketing are doing as the hundreds of £££ I would have spent in 2019/20 on a dozen or more sets (Exclusives!!!!!) is still sat in my bank. Meanwhile, in the same period, I have bought one set.
