Imperial/Rebel Death Match: 75298 AT-AT vs Tauntaun Microfighters

It was an awesome day in May 2003 when LEGO released their first Imperial Walker (4483 AT-AT) and again when they capitalized on the set’s immediate popularity when followed it up with the Mini-Scale version (4489 AT-AT) a few months later. LEGO have repeated their success with the All Terrain Armored Transport seven times – including a Microfighter version (75075 AT-AT) in 2015 and this most recent dueling two-pack.

The same can’t be said for the AT-ATs nemesis – the hairiest lizard on Hoth (and the known Star Wars galaxy) though because it has had far fewer trips to the light of day.

It wasn’t until 2009 that LEGO finally added the tauntaun to the LEGO Star Wars universe when they released 7749 Echo Base in June/July. The mold was retired in 2011, and as chance might have it LEGOLAND California brought out their park exclusive to mark the opening of Star Wars Miniland that year. A new System-scale tauntaun was released in 2011; a run that lasted until 2016 when the last set with a tauntaun in it (75098 Assault on Hoth) was released. Since then the only new tauntaun has been the micro-scale version that was included in the 2020 advent calendar – until now, anyway.

Two bags and two sets of instructions for two cute builds is the order of the day with his new dual Microfighters set, with the option of solo building them one after the other or in a race with a friend.

With a touch more detail than 75075 AT-AT, the included chibi-Imperial walker is an improvement in design accuracy while keeping the model within the proportions of the Microfighter range. As an unintentional bonus, the stumpy legs and big feet give this model a Something, Something, Something Darkside look.

Understandably, given the compressed Microfighters proportions, the tauntaun looks like a cross between a velociraptor and a turkey. The horns and reins from the regular minifigure-scale version completes the picture.

Included with the two Microfighters are the minifigures you’d expect – the AT-AT Driver is the same as the grim-faced one that came with last year’s 75288 AT-AT but the Luke Skywalker in cold-weather combat gear is all new. As well as having a more detailed torso print, this Luke Skywalker minifigure is the first Hoth Luke to have a balaclava printed on the head piece and to be given printed legs.

Following in the footsteps of 75288 Escape Pod vs. Dewback and 75265 T-16 Skyhopper vs Bantha Microfighters, this vehicle/animal pairing definitely hits the nail on the head, but is leaving fans wondering why the more appropriate snowspeeder, a Microfighter that hasn’t been revisited since it was originally introduced in 2015, wasn’t included?

Available now through LEGO.com, Amazon (USA/Canada/United Kingdom/Germany/Australia), Target (USA/Australia), and Kmart (USA/Australia), Kohls and Barnes & Noble, priced $19.99.
