LEGO CON: A Disappointment For Star Wars Fans

Today marked the first-ever LEGO Con – an online event hosted by LEGO to share behind-the-scenes information as well as new product announcements. While many themes were represented during the event, The Holo-Brick Archives only cares about one – Star Wars!

Just over two weeks ago we shared the announcement about the coming event that promised the reveal of a new Star Wars set. Just prior to that leaked images from a Japanese catalog revealed most of the summer wave sets which LEGO followed up by adding two of them to the official website. The fact that a few sets still had not been revealed created speculation over what this reveal would be.

Well the wait is over! Nearly at the end of the stream (at 1:35:20), Michelle Khare and Melvin Odoom (the hosts for the event) presented the first big LEGO Star Wars reveal of the online convention. After a video clip of two children dressed as Ahsoka Tano and The Mandalorian, a destroyed version of the Imperial Light Cruiser is re-built using the Force.

Welcoming one of the chief designers on the Star Wars team onto the stage, Moff Gideon’s Light Cruiser was given its full and proper reveal (at 1:37:09) by Michael Lee Stockwell, who showed off some of the features of this new set.

Contrary to what was expected, this was not the only set due for a reveal, because on some of the surrounding tables stood other Star Wars models.

Two new sets were left: the Imperial Armored Marauder (1:39:44) and an interestingly named Boba Fett’s Starship (1:40.26). Michael then spent some time showing off the features of each ship. The Slave I is sure to be a fan-favorite and has some unexpected features including a service cart that doubles as a display stand and a carbonite block in the cargo hold. While photos of all three sets had already been leaked, this was the first official reveal. Michael then answered some questions before the stream went on to the next section.

With just under 10 minutes devoted to these three new sets, the Star Wars segment of the first LEGO CON event was done and dusted by the 1:44:04 mark.

While this was no doubt a disappointment for many fans who had speculated that the reveal would be the Republic Gunship, the fan-voted BrickHeadz, the rumored UCS AT-AT or any kind of update of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, it just means these other sets will have to wait. On a positive note, these three are great-looking sets with an even better selection of minifigures.
