The Dune Abides At LEGO

Despite the actress who plays Cara Dune in The Mandalorian being dropped from the cast after a contentious tweet earlier this year and a question mark over the character’s continuance in The Mandalorian, LEGO have committed to at least one more set with the Republic Ranger in it.

In a seemingly inadvertent leak, when LEGO published a Japanese catalog with a double-page spread of the upcoming Summer wave, the new 75315 Moff Gideon’s Light Cruiser could be seen to include Cara Dune in its minifigure complement, and – based on the lo-res image that comes from the catalog – the minifigure looks to be the same one that came with 75254 AT-ST Raider, released in 2019.

With rumors that Hasbro had stopped making Cara Dune action figures – an assumption that seemed to be supported by an official statement from Hasbro in which they explained the company had “completed development of all season 1 and 2 product featuring Cara Dune, and there are no current plans to create more” – and Entertainment Earth sharing the news that Funko “discontinued production of this item” and the retailer would be issuing refunds, it looked like the writing was on the wall for the LEGO version of this character.

Responding to a tweet by Brick Fanatics, Sam Johnson – the LEGO Ideas team’s design manager – explained that LEGO feels that the minifigure represents the character of Cara Dune and not the actress who plays her.

Worried that the trend would cause a scarcity of the minifigure (which had been averaging $8 on Bricklink), LEGO collectors began to buy these up in earnest and its value on the secondary market steadily increased to $35. The pace slowed when rumors of the inclusion of this minifigure in 75315 Moff Gideon’s Light Cruiser began to circulate – despite Ryan McCan’tgetitright’s prediction that LEGO would also can the character.

Now that official images confirm that Cara isn’t going anywhere anytime soon prices are expected to drop down to the $10 mark again, though with a batch of rumors re-surfacing that Gina Carano is going to get recast (presumably for The Mandalorian and not Rangers of the Republic, which Disney has confirmed is no longer in active development) it’s anyone’s guess where the minfigures price will go next.
