Mini Steps: The Evolution Of The Mace Windu Minifigure

The first Mace Windu was released in 2005 in set 7261 Clone Turbo Tank. He was one of the five minifigures released with a light-up lightsaber (LULS) that year. We have covered before how these minifigures were unique, but Mace required that the specially molded head to be produced in reddish brown. His unique purple lightsaber blade also required a re-color of the 4L bar. One of the strangest production changes to occur was the re-release of 7261 the following year with a non-LULS Mace Windu. The printing was identical to the light-up version.

As was the trend in the last 2000s, Mace got a Clone Wars variant with oversized facial features in 2009 with the release of 8019 Republic Attack Shuttle. This version went with all dark tan clothing and got a unique torso print. This version was also found in one of the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con exclusives, 7868 Mace Windu’s Jedi Starfighter, and the 852555 magnet set with Count Dooku and Yoda. In 2012 the body was re-used for another variant, but the awful Clone Wars head was replaced with a much more realistic print and a cape was added. This version was found in 9526 Palpatine’s Arrest.

The following year 75019 AT-TE was released which came with another Windu minifig. This one kept the same head and torso as the prior version but was the first to feature printed legs! It is also the only version to date to come with white legs.

It would be a five year stretch before the next version of Mace came out. This time accompanying General Grievous in 75199 General Grievous’ Combat Speeder. This version reverted back to dark tan legs and updated the printing. The face and torso printing were also updated. The following year this Mace was also included with the Awesome Jedi Tales book.

Up until the official reveal yesterday, it was unknown if the rumors of Mace Windu’s inclusion in 75309 Republic Gunship were true, and if he was included if it would be a new version. Now that the image’s are out, this Mace will make variant number 7. This version has updated head (angry face) and torso (dirt stains) printing. The legs, however, are the same as the previous version.
