Some news is better than no news, and those who caught the Opening Night Live 2021 last night got to see the world premiere of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga’s gameplay trailer, which ran an hour and 25 minutes into the live stream and lasted two and a half minutes.
A year of waiting, encapsulated in 150 seconds.
There’s no doubting that the rendering – which is presumed to be from the next-gen Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles – is very polished but the gameplay trailer demonstrated very little of the actual gameplay until the last 50 seconds of the two-minute-long video clip.
The game that promises to deliver all nine Star Wars movies in a LEGO-fied environment has been designed from scratch and is expected to contain all-new levels, game play features, action sequences and puzzles to solve. But will the year-long wait – which has been extended by another nine months – be worth it?
Perhaps most concerning is that Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment didn’t give a definitive release date for the game, but simply advertised it as coming in Spring 2022, a period that is confusing in that it can either last from the start of March to the end of May (meteorological) or March 20th to June 21st (astronomical).
The last time LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was due to drop was May 31st, 2021 – meaning that the game has had a full year added to its release schedule.
The relief that some new information has been shared is universal – particularly after the game failed to launch last October and in the Spring just gone – but fans of the LEGO Star Wars video game franchise are still expressing their frustration at having to wait even longer, and collectors are chomping at the bit to add the exclusive Blue Milk Luke Skywalker minifigure to their collection.
First announced at E3 in June 2019, the game went on pre-sale in June 2020, with a number of retailer exclusives selling out in days. Despite not having an official release date, those who invested early expected to get their copies of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga within a few months and, over a year later, are still waiting – now to be told that they have up to a further nine months of delay before they can enjoy their game.
With the title pushed back even further fans are expecting a bigger and better game, and undoubtedly those who have bought PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms will benefit, but the bulk of the gaming community who have older consoles will not, prompting many to wonder if its all going to be worth it in the end.
