Mini Steps: The Evolution Of The Gamorrean Guard Minifigure

These green-skinned, pig-like creatures came from the Outer Rim planet of Gamorr. Gamorreans lived in clans and although their society was matriarchal, the male leader was selected based on physical prowess and combat abilities. This makes sense then why Gamorrean boars were known for their strength and fighting capabilities – two characteristics that are perfect for guards.

Jabba the Hutt employed Gamorreans in his Palace which is where we are first introduced to them. They were loyal to Bib Fortuna after Jabba’s passing, and now are loyal to Boba Fett as he has taken the throne.

The first Gamorrean Guard released in LEGO form came in 2003 with set 4476 Jabba’s Prize. It required a uniquely designed head element in the “sandwich board” style that also mimicked the rotund abdomen that was characteristic of the ones seen in Return of the Jedi. It came with a plain brown torso with dark gray arms and sand green legs on brown hips.

Three years later the next update was introduced with 6210 Jabba’s Sail Barge. It wasn’t much of an update though because the head element remained the same without additional printing. The torso was updated to reddish-brown with reddish-brown arms, and the legs were changed to monochrome sand green. The good part was that it provided another opportunity to pick up this minifig.

The proper update would come in 2012 when 9516 Jabba’s Palace was released. Although the nostalgia of the original Gamorrean Guard is hard to beat, the updated head/body mold was a nice addition. This time the head was cast in reddish-brown but came with full printing to capture all the details. The downside to this element was that the proportions didn’t feel quite as accurate since it made the minifigure taller. The torso was again reddish-brown but this time came with olive green arms. The legs were changed to olive green as well and given leg printing for the first time. The same minifig would appear the following year in 75004 Rancor Pit.

Current rumors suggest that 75326, which has been labeled as Boba Fett’s Palace, will include a pair of Gamorrean Guard minifigures. Based on what we’ve seen so far, it is possible that a new head sculpt will be required since they are not currently wearing armor. However, it is also entirely possible that future episodes will see them fit with armor that is reminiscent of their time spent with Jabba.

What are you hoping to see with these supporting characters? Do you think LEGO will make a new mold, or will they rely on the same one from nearly a decade ago? Let us know in the comments.
