After a gap of nearly two years, LEGO has brought back the much-loved battle pack! Having been a staple of the LEGO Star Wars fan’s collection since 2007 when 7654 Droids Battle Pack and 7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack were first introduced to meet the demand of the growing ranks of army builders, they noticeably absent in 2021, causing much fear and wailing within the LEGO Star Wars community.
However, after receiving a tongue-lashing from brazen Internet warriors when word got out that 2021 would pass without any new battle pack additions, LEGO responded with a clear message:
Battle packs are not gone forever.

Clarifying the situation, the Star Wars design team leader explained that battle packs didn’t fit in with the 2021 assortment of sets and went on to assure fans that they would be back.

With two bags and a small instruction booklet inside the box, you know this set isn’t going to take long to complete – and you’d be right because it’s an easy build in 15 minutes. Getting going with the four ethnically and gender diverse minifigure cohort first, the build moves on to the speeder bike, the E-web heavy repeating blaster, and finally the snowbank.
Most fans purchasing this set will be in it for the three snowtroopers – two male (both Caucasian and Black toned skin) and one female (with Caucasian facial features) – and the Latino/Asian colored scout trooper. While the snowtroopers are minifigure fodder, the scout trooper is all-new-for-2022!
Like three-quarters of the minifigures included in 75320 Snowtrooper Battle Pack, two of the three accessories are akin to repacks. The speeder bike was last seen in 75313 AT-AT, but with a $799.99 price tag, this set is a much more affordable way to add this to your fleet of Imperial vehicles. The same can be said for the E-web cannon, which has the added feature of a stud shooter.
Best of all – and proving that simplicity sells – is the collection of white bricks that make up the snowbank that serves as cover for the advancing Imperial army. The only feedback about this add-on is that the gray cheese slopes (presumably meant to be rocks) stick out like a sore thumb and would have been better if they were white.
This new battle pack of Imperial recon and raiders is very reminiscent of the Imperial Attack Base playset that Kenner released in 1980, and slots in remarkably well with the rash of sets that LEGO released to (belatedly) mark the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.
Is it worth the price though?
As appealing as the packaging graphics make this set, the contents of 75320 Snowtrooper Battle Pack is one of those sets that is belied by the size of the box.
With a low brick count compared to the four minifigures, at nearly twice the community accepted mean of $0.10 dollars per brick this set takes a big jump away from the $14.99 that recent battle packs like 75266 Sith Troopers Battle Pack, and 75267 Mandalorian Battle Pack were priced at.
While it’s great to see LEGO releasing complementary assortments close together – which supports both sales and play – and it’s easy to acknowledge that 75320 Snowtrooper Battle Pack does complement the recent rash of sets that have added to The Empire Strikes Back collection, the inflated price tag of $19.99 does feel like LEGO is capitalizing on the desire of LEGO Star Wars fans to fill up their 75313 AT-AT crew compartment.
For those who are still looking for more Snowtroopers – and weren’t able to stock on copies of the 80th issue of the official LEGO Star Wars Magazine that hit newsagency shelves in January – this is currently the most affordable option for bulk Snowtrooper minifigures.
For that reason – and the fact that it is a fun set to build and play with – it can be recommended, but don’t expect a whole lot more.
