From the fresh faces and smiles on the staff at the LEGO booth, you wouldn’t believe that this was the second day of Star Wars Celebration Anaheim because there was no sign of lagging energy levels.
After a feverish flurry of activity to get the mural finished off, the new addition – and the formal launch of the Summer of Star Wars campaign – was unveiled: a volleyball set up with a mega-sized Darth Vader minifigure dressed up in a bright Hawaiian shirt.
Now that the white sphere suspended over the mural was clearly a beach volleyball, plenty of people were coming around to spike the ball with summer-fun Darth Vader, and take time to appreciate the other mosaics that decorated the LEGO booth.
With the Summer of Star Wars panel looming that morning the official LEGO staff were readying the troops who were remaining on the exhibitor floor, making sure that the booth would continue to run smoothly while the bigwigs were on keeping fans updated on the Galaxy Stage between 1230 and 1330 pm.
Word that rare polybags – like the Shadow ARF Trooper from 2011 and TC-14 from 2012 – being given away as gift with purchases (GWP) saw a surge in attendance at the pop-up LEGO store, with plenty of collectors taking advantage of low thresholds allowing them to get minifigures that haven’t seen the light of day for a decade, for half their secondary market value.
The entire stock of GWP polybags was gone by late morning, and the day’s allotment of 40547 BrickHeadz Obi-Wan Kenobi & Darth Vader were depleted by early afternoon and the line became non-existent.
Cleared of all the people who had spect the last two days waiting to get the chance to own the latest LEGO Star Wars BrickHeadz set early, the view of the minifigure monolith was finally unobstructed and the offering of the complete official collection of LEGO Star Wars minifigures could be appreciated.
With it being a Friday there were more people in attendance at the convention, and LEGO remained a focus for fans. The small stage was receiving more attention, and the crowd attending the minifigure talk with Erik Varzegi in the morning and the later LEGO Star Wars design team Q&A were disproportionately bigger than the day before – likely because of the two new sets that LEGO had revealed during their main panel talk.
