Working until 10 pm the night before, and coming in at 7 am this morning, the team at the Star Wars Celebration LEGO booth pulled out all the stops to complete the display and have their footprint ready for the masses when the doors opened at 10 am.
Despite a fire alarm going off at 9 am, forcing the entire convention center to be evacuated, the booth was assembled, displays polished, activities primed and happy smiling faces readied.
The entire LEGO booth was a bustle of activity, with all four sides having a different focus.
With the largest part of their footprint given over to the Summer of LEGO Star Wars mural, dozens of people – solo fans and parents with children – were helping to place 1×1 LEGO bricks on the pre-marked and numbered 6×6 plates.
Equally popular was the curved hyperspace tunnel with its display of the latest sets – with a few empty cases promising more reveals as Star Wars Celebration went on. This wasn’t the only place where convention-goers could see LEGO Star Wars Sets either, because there were a few free-standing and wall-mounted displays placed around the booth.
Tucked away, around the back were two activities that didn’t get as much attention as they deserved: the line to play LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga on the specially crafted Xbox console was surprisingly short (which was probably a relief to the diligent staff member who sterilized the controller after each player finished their turn) and the tiny stage where various members of LEGO staff and attached presenters gave talks on different aspects of the Lego Star Wars theme was sadly over-looked.
By far the busiest area was the line for the pop-up LEGO retail space. Stretching back past the minifigure monolith, round the corner and away into the distance, fans wanting to add the specially wrapped 40547 BrickHeadz Obi-Wan Kenobi & Darth Vader set to their collection were lining up for over an hour from 10 am right through to the close if the day at 7 pm. With three LEGO Star Wars team designers – Jens Kronvold Frederiksen, Michael Lee Stockwell and Cesar Soares on site to sign sets, the chance to own a few unique items – and great souvenirs – was too good a chance to pass up for many.
With the day finished, staff members – including model shop lead Erik Varzegi – feverishly finished off the Sumer of Star Wars mural so the next element of the growing attraction could be installed for the next day – stay tuned to The Holo-Brick Archives for continued updates of the greatest convention from a galaxy far, far away.
