This farm boy from Tatooine turned Jedi Master would become the hero of the Rebel Alliance during the time of the Galactic Empire. As a result of his presence throughout the Original Trilogy as well as the Sequel Trilogy, Luke Skywalker has become the most numerous LEGO Star Wars minifigure with over 50 unique variants. In order to make this evolution easier to follow, Luke will receive the first multipart Mini Steps!
Although Luke is seen in a variety of outfits, there is one used in some other worldly locations. Bespin Luke – as he would come to be known – first appeared in LEGO form in 2003. The figure was included in the infamous 10123 Cloud City set. The head and hair were common among other Luke variants, and the shirt was reused from the City theme. This meant that only the legs and hips were unique. While there are similar tan pocketed legs the exact pattern is unique to this figure. Additionally the brown hips used to represent his belt and belt buckle are unique as well. This combination has made this the most expensive Luke Skywalker minifigure to date!
After fifteen years this version got an update with the release of the new 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City. With that much time gone by it’s no surprise that the minifigure was a complete overhaul of the previous version. The color of his torso and legs was changed to dark tan, and the yellow skin tones of the old version had been replaced with flesh tones. The printing of the face, torso, and legs was significantly improved. This version would later be included in the canceled 2020 Star Wars Celebration exclusive 75294 Bespin Duel and packed with the November 2020 issue of the LEGO Star Wars magazine.
Many Star Wars fans are probably already aware, but some may not know that Luke’s Bespin outfit is the same as the one he is seen wearing on Dagobah. He has obviously ditched the jacket to reveal his tank top underneath and picked up a backpack to finish out his look. Just like the first Bespin Luke, 2003 marked the release of the first Dagobah Luke. Coming with 4502 X-wing Fighter this version interestingly came with dark gray pants. The torso was uniquely printed to represent his tank top, and the figure came with plain yellow arms. The head and hair matched the Bespin version. This minifig is completed with a brick-built backpack that includes a uniquely printed tile.
By 2018 when the updated version was released with 75208 Yoda’s Hut, LEGO had corrected the error and given Luke the same dark tan pants as were later used on the Bespin version. While I liked the sand green tank top of the first version, the updated Luke came with a tan printed top which was more accurate to the onscreen costume. He also got a unique head print with a meditating face on one side and a concentrated one on the other. Replacing the backpack of the first version was more of a brick-built ledge for Yoda to stand on.
