Dubbed the Oscars of the toy industry, the Toy of the Year (TOTY) ceremony (which would normally take part parallel with the New York Toy Fair) is presented annually by The Toy Foundation to the top toys, games, and properties of the year.
Nominations took place last year and were announced on November 8th, and judges in the toy retailers, consumers, media, and members of The Toy Association took nearly two months to deliberate before the winners were announced on February 18th.
Of the eighteen categories, LEGO took top place in eight of them – including Playset of the Year, which was awarded to 75312 Boba Fett’s Starship, a category that is reflected by toys that are designed to work together to enact some action or event, including characters and role play.
Grab this set while you can, because it is due to retire by the end of the year, reports Brick Fanatics.
LEGO has been a long time participant of the TOTY Awards, and in recent years 75292 Razor Crest took the Construction Toy of the Year at last year’s ceremonies, 75253 BOOST Droid Commander winning the coveted STEAM Toy of the Year in 2020, and in 2018 the theme won twice with Construction Toy of the Year going to 75187 BB-8 and 75257 Millennium Falcon grabbing the Specialty Toy of the Year award.
As well as receiving accolades from the award’s organizers, The Toy Foundation, LEGO has also helped to present an award when George Lucas was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2007.
