Unlike those killjoy LEGO reviewers who published their door-by-door account of each what’s behind each door in this year’s LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar back in August, we at The Holo-Brick Archives have held off until the true season of Advent has begun.
Like all our other LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar reviews, we start out with a reminder that Advent originally hailed from Germany, where in the nineteenth-century the tradition of marking the days until Christmas with a small candy or gift began. Since then it has spread across the world – and the galaxy!
Meaning “coming” in Latin, the season of Advent – which traditionally starts on the Sunday closest to Saint Andrew’s Day – is a period in the Christian calendar that spans the four Sundays before Christmas and is the time given over to preparing and reflecting on the real meaning of Christmas.
Because the closest Sunday can fall between November 27 and December 3 inclusive, the Advent calendar usually begins on December 1 which is also the first day that a Christmas tree can be decorated. Though these have only been around in LEGO form since 2011, Advent calendars aren’t new to Star Wars fans, having initially arrived in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. Following their first release, LEGO have now produced a total of eleven LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendars for collectors and fans.

Normally a traditional advent calendar would feature Christian depictions (like manger scenes or Saint Nicholas) or winter landscapes, leaving the surprise reveal to be discovered as each door is opened, but in the world of LEGO – where box graphics sells products – the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar is covered in spoilers (21 out of 24 to be precise) that largely give away the contents.
Opening the front panel not only reveals a particularly pleasing piece of art that shows the Millennium Falcon in a snow-covered Kashyyyk landscape that acts as both a diorama and a playmat. With the right banners and text this would make a perfect box front, saving the mystery of what starships, vehicles, micro-locations and minifigures are hidden inside.
No different to any of the others, this year’s 75279 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar has 24 (a number that isn’t set to change) small doors; one for each day of December leading up to and including Christmas Eve. Lego have really nailed it with this set. The Vader and Poe figures are brilliant and then seeing them on The Holiday Special too was the icing on the cake. Add to those a festive D-O, a snowman Gonk Droid and a red nosed Tauntaun and this set ticks all the Christmas themed boxes. It doesn’t stop there. A totally new Falcon, and redesigned X Wing and Snowspeeder just confirms this to be the best Advent Calendar yet. The flipside to this is that this is yet another set added to a long lost of sets that I would love to have bought in 2020 but for various reasons been unable to do.
